On this election day, we face the some of the same uncertainty as our ancestors did. In elections past, four U.S. Presidential candidates won the popular vote, but ultimately lost the presidency. These candidates are:
- Andrew Jackson won the popular vote, but lost the election to John Quincy Adams in the 1824 election.
- Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote, but lost the election to Rutherford B. Hayes in the 1876 election.
- Grover Cleveland won the popular vote, but lost the election to Benjamin Harrison in the 1888 election.
- Al Gore won the popular vote, but lost the election to George W. Bush in 2000.
Will we have another name to add to this list for the 2008 election? We will have to wait patiently to find out. Just like my Dad always said, “Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched!”
